Olympic host city to propose additional events
The International Olympic Committee has approved a set of recommendations, including one that will allow a host city to propose adding events to the Games.
The IOC opened an extraordinary general assembly meeting in Monaco on Monday. Ninety-six committee members discussed President Thomas Bach's 40-point reform package, known as "Olympic Agenda 2020."
The members unanimously endorsed a proposal to remove the current ceiling of 28 sports in the Summer Games while applying limits of 310 medal events and 10,500 athletes.
The approved reforms allow changes in sports to be made 3 years before the Games, compared to the current 7 years.
This will make Tokyo's 2020 Summer Games the first to propose additional events. It raises hopes for restoring baseball and softball and for introducing karate and squash.
Other proposals approved by the committee include holding some events outside a host city for cost-cutting reasons, or even outside the host country in exceptional cases.
Tokyo may speed up moves to move some of the 2020 events to other cities.
