Hundreds isolated in Tokushima due to snow

More than 400 people in Tokushima Prefecture, western Japan, are still isolated 4 days after a snowstorm hit the area.

Prefectural officials say 452 people in 258 households in 3 municipalities remained isolated as of 8 PM Monday. Fallen trees are blocking many roads.

Self-Defense Force personnel are deployed in the affected areas for relief operations. They are also working with municipal officials to assess the situation.

After flying into one of the isolated municipalities, Tsurugi Town, SDF personnel found a 98-year-old woman in cardiac and respiratory arrest at her home. The woman was living alone. She was later confirmed dead at a hospital. Police say she is likely to have died on Saturday.

The prefectural officials say they have not been able to contact 1 resident in Miyoshi City
